when to add the -ate suffix
When do you add the -ate suffix? I was under the impression that it was only when it is an anion, but we did some examples in discussion that didn't follow this rule.

Re: when to add the -ate suffix
-Ate and -Ite are usually used for polyatomic ions. The -ate suffix is used when a molecule has the largest number of oxygen atoms, and the -ite suffix is used for the molecule with one less oxygen atom than the -ate molecule. -ide is used on monoatomic ions that contain zero oxygen atoms. For example, Cl- is chloride,
ClO2- is chlorite, ClO3- is chlorate.
ClO2- is chlorite, ClO3- is chlorate.

Yes it is used when the coordination complex is an anion, but it can also be used for polyatomic ions. -Ite is O2 and -ate is O3, and -ate will always have the largest number of oxygen atoms.
