Memorization

Postby 805754009 » Sun Dec 05, 2021 7:05 pm

For things like HClO3 and HNO2, is there a way to know that they are called chloric acid and nitrous acid based off of their structure or is this just something that has to be memorized?

For me, it was just something I had to commit to memory.

There are naming schemes for acids based on the number of oxygens they contain. These include various suffixes (-ic, -ous) and prefixes (per-, hypo-) that indicate whether an acid has more or less oxygen atoms than the baseline anion, but this scheme was not covered in class.

Hopefully this helps and please correct me if there are any mistakes.

I had to just memorize the names of the common ones.

I believe we have to memorize them but only the list of strong acids. Everything else would be a weaker acid.

Unfortunately, this is something that we need to have memorized. However there is a trick to know if a compound is an acid or a base. This website was a rally great tool to helpng me learn this. https://chem.libretexts.org/Bookshelves ... ucci_et_al.)/16%3A_Acids_and_Bases/16.4%3A_Strong_Acids_and_Strong_Bases
