Potassium Hexacyanidochromate(III)

Postby Teresa Dinh 3L » Wed Dec 01, 2021 11:16 am

Hello. This is from Focus 9C.1 Question #3.

Why is it that it is K3[Cr(CN)6] instead of [K(CN)6]Cr3? And also why is it hexaCYANIDOchromate rather than hexaCYANOchromate?

Hi there!
The (III) after chromate refers to the charge of the Cr atoms, not the number of Cr Atoms.
CyanIDO and cyanO are interchangeable. In lecture, I believe that Dr. Lavelle used cyanO but the textbook uses cyanIDO.
Hope this helps! :)
