Drawing a molecule

Postby Jordan Barrera 1G » Wed Nov 13, 2024 11:36 pm

When drawing a molecule with dashes, wedges, and solid lines, how do you know where to put the dashes, solid lines, and wedges? I know what each one represents, but how do you determine the shape of the molecule (such as how do you determine where certain molecules go in a Lewis structure)? I understand that certain molecules need certain electrons and a number of bonds, and need to be paired with certain atoms, but how do you know where to write the atom on top, on bottom, or to the sides? (Sorry if that didn't make sense)

It doesn't matter which atom you put in each plane as different views would reveal different orientations of the structure (basically, the way you look at a molecule determines which has the dash and bold). The shape is used by counting the number of regions of e- density (bonding and lone pair) in order to figure out the VSPER shape.
