The oxidation number (or oxidation state) refers to the charge an atom would have if the compound were purely ionic, indicating how many electrons an atom has gained or lost in a bond. The coordination number refers to the number of atoms, ions, or molecules that a central atom or ion is directly bonded to in a complex or coordination compound. Oxidation number is about electron transfer, while coordination number is about the number of direct bonds to a central atom. Hope this answer helps!
