Naming coordination geometry (not complex name)

Postby Angel Shen 2K » Wed Dec 04, 2024 5:41 am

In naming geometries like "square planar," how does the reasoning differ between VSEPR theory and coordination complexes? Specifically, is the classification of a coordination complex as square planar solely because it has four ligands, or are there additional factors involved?

When classifying a coordination compound as square planar, it not only depends on the fact that it has four ligands but also the metal's electron configuration and whether the ligands are monodentate or polydentate. For VSEPR theory, it only depends on the fact that there are four atoms attached and two lone pairs.
