How is carbonate bidentate?

Postby Arnav Ranade 2K » Sat Dec 09, 2023 2:07 pm

The textbook question 9C.5 says carbonate can be monodentate or bidentate, but don't you need two spacers between the molecules that bond to the metal for a molecule to have two binding points to the metal? In CO3 2-, only one carbon atom separates all the oxygen with lone pairs, so wouldn't carbonate only be monodentate?

I think that having 2 spacers makes the best bidentate ligand, but it is not necessarily a requirement. Based on its orientation, 2 of the oxygen with a - charge can still attach to a single ligand.
