Stable Chelating Ligands

Postby JohnVRobinson » Sat Dec 09, 2023 2:18 pm

What advantage does chelating ligands formation provide them opposed to other structures?

Because of the multiple points of bond formation, this causes a stronger bond for the metal to the chelating ligands. Thus, the more bonds that are formed between a metal and its chelating ligand, the more stable it is, and the more strength it has.

Chelating ligands can bind to metal ions in two places. Because it's forming two bonds, chelating ligands bind more strongly to the metal ions than a ligand that is only able to bind to one site on the metal atom.
