Trans- vs Cis- Complexes

Postby Alexandra_Ivanova_1A » Fri Nov 04, 2016 12:22 pm

On page 116 of the Course Reader, the notes cover cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) as well as trans-diamminedichloriplatinum(II). Aside from what they are able to/are more likely bond to, what are the differences in the properties of a cis and trans version of a molecule, and how would each form? Is there a way to tell which formation of a complex/compound is more likely to occur? Are the bond angles the same with just the bonded ligands being in different positions, or does that vary as well?

One thing I believe I have correct is that cis forms are polar and trans forms are non polar. This can be important when talking about trans fats and other variations of biological compounds.

I have the same questions too, about this concept covered in lecture.
