Cis Vs. Trans

Postby 604805638 » Sat Nov 05, 2016 12:13 pm

In lecture we discussed how cisplatin would be formed instead of its trans counterpart because in biological contexts its more useful for chemotherapy etc., but in general how would we know which ligand would form more likely in the cis shape or the trans shape?

I could be wrong but I am almost certain that either is likely to form and that we will usually be told weather or not the structure we are dealing with is cis or trans... An explanation for one formation being more likely than the other may have to do with dipoles but for now I think you will be fine just knowing what cis and trans mean instead of trying to figure out which is more likely to form.

I think the cis and trans deals with organic chemistry and will not likely be discussed heavily until then
