NH2 Bonds

When we used NH2 in class, several times we referred to it as having on electron pair, but shouldn't NH2 have two pairs of unbound valence electrons?

Hi neighbor,
Yes in addition to the 2 electrons nitrogen uses to bond to two hydrogens, it has two lone pairs. This requires an extra electron apart from the 5 supplied by nitrogen and 1 supplied by each hydrogen. This gives nitrogen a formal charge of -1 giving the entire molecule a charge of -1. The above response is correct, however I would like to mention something that may clear up the situation further.

I believe that Professor Lavelle mentioned that there is one pair of electrons on NO2 that contributes to bonding in a transition metal complex. While there are two lone pairs, ammine is only monodentate.

Thus, the focus of that part of the lesson was on one lone pair of ammine even though there are two. (:
