Wrting the Chemical Formula for Coordination Compounds

Postby Emerald Ellspermann 1K » Sun Nov 13, 2016 9:00 am

When writing the chemical formula for coordination compounds, how should you determine what order to write the molecules in? Is there a rule to follow for writing chemical formulas for coordination compounds?

When writing out the chemical formula the order doesn't matter. However, when writing out the name then it's alphabetical.

Actually there is a rule.

(Here's the URL in case the picture doesn't load, this site is super helpful for naming coordinate compounds: http://chem.libretexts.org/Core/Inorganic_Chemistry/Coordination_Chemistry/Basics_of_Coordination_Chemistry/Nomenclature_of_Coordination_Complexes)

I also found that information on the internet about placing the anionic ligand before the neutral ligand in the chemical formula, but the some of the answers in the book, for example for 31d, had the neutral ligand go before the anionic ligand, so what is real?
