Coordination number?

Just to clarify, the course readers says that the coordination number is = to the number of bonds.
By this does it mean that the coordination number is equal to the number of elements connected to the transition metal or the actual number of bonds (e.g. there's one double bond so the coordination number is 2)?

I think that the coordination number refers to how many ligands the metal is attached to...so even if there is a double bond, it counts as one (unless you are looking at polydentates, in which these bond with more than one atom and increases the coordination number)

The coordination number refers to the number of atoms directly bonded to the transition metal. If one of the atoms shares a double bond with the transition metal, it still counts as 1 when finding the coordination number.

How likely would it be for something to triple bond with a transition metal? If so, would the coordination number still be 1?
