coordination number

is coordination number total number of bonds or just number of bonds to the central atom? thanks

So the coordination number is how many bonds there are to the central metal inside the coordination complex, which is indicated by the brackets. Hopefully this answers your question!

Coordination number is the number of bonds the central atom has inside of the complex, or brackets. Be sure to take into account ligands that can have more than on bond such a (en) or oxalato when counting up the total number of bonds.
