Ligands

Postby Isabella Sanzi 2E » Wed Nov 15, 2017 10:41 pm

I am just seeking some clarification on how many ligands can attach to a transition metal. Does it just depend on the number of orbitals the metal could potentially hybridize, or is it dependent on another factor?

i think the coordination number just depends on the specific transition metal used, but know that the number of coordinate metal-ligand bonds generally increases as the positive charge on the metal ion becomes larger

The coordination number is basically just the number of bonds on the central metal atom.
