TM Cations

Postby Amanda Hagen 1L » Thu Nov 16, 2017 10:29 pm

How many bonds do transition metal cations normally form or does it vary across elements? In the examples in class they all formed 6 bonds and created an octahedral molecular shape. Is this always the case in the formation of a coordination complex?

It does not always have to be six, however that is a very common configuration for a coordination complex.

if a TM doesn't form 6 bonds how many bonds would it usually form?
