Substituting Ligands

I vaguely remember discussing that H2O ligands can be substituted for NH3 molecules, for example, but am not quite sure why. Could anyone explain this to me?

Correct, I mentioned this briefly in class to illustrate that it can easy to change one coordination compound into another.
The reason is ligands bind transition metal cations with different strengths. Therefore a stronger binding ligand can displace a weaker binding ligand.
You will not be expected to know which ligands are stronger versus weaker. Chem 171 is a good inorganic course that goes into more detail.
