Coordination Number

Postby Isa Samad 1L » Mon Nov 20, 2017 3:00 pm

Is the coordination number basically the number of ligands attached to a central TM atom? Does a ligand being polydentate factor into the coordination number of the complex?

The coordination number is just the number of bonds attached to the central metal atom.

A coordination number refers to the number of bonds formed rather than the number of ligands, so if a ligand is polydentate it will be contributing [number of bonds] to the coordination number rather than just the one ligand.
