Determining how many binding sites a ligand has

At face-value, it is not too difficult to determine whether or not a ligand has more than one binding site for electrons. This is because we are pretty familiar with drawing Lewis structures and taking lone pairs of electrons into consideration.

However, I'm a little bit confused when it comes to determining the maximum number of places on a ligand that can bind simultaneously to a single center. How do we go about determining how many binding sites the ligand can have? What must we look for in the structure/formula of the ligand to indicate whether it will be a mono dentate, bidentate, tridentate, etc...

A ligand (polydentate) can bond 2 to 9 max. To determine the number of binding sites a ligand has, count the number of atoms that have lone pairs and can act as donor atoms. For example, if there are two donor atoms then it has two binding sites and thus is a bidentate ligand (like ethylenediamine)
