Drawing Coordination Compounds

Postby Abdullah2I » Sat Dec 02, 2017 10:08 pm

Do you draw coordination compounds the same way as normal Lewis structures?

I believe so only that the transition metal does not follow the octet rule.

If there are different ligands around the metal, does it matter where I put each ligand?

No, as long as all of the ligands are present and bonded to the metal, it doesn't matter where they are on the lewis structure.

Yes! Drawing them should be similar to drawing Lewis Structures. You just have to be a little bit careful because transition metals have different valence electrons, so you also have to pay attention to that. Also, pay attention to what atoms are specifically bonded to the transition metal/Lewis acid. Adding the lone pairs and determining the formal charge is also helpful to determine the type of dentate it is.

Thank you all for answering my question, it really helped.
