Polarity/Dipole Moment

Postby Abdullah2I » Wed Dec 06, 2017 3:19 pm

How are polarity and the dipole moment related, if they are at all? Someone please explain.

A bond can be polar if there is a large difference in electronegativity between two atoms. This difference in electronegativity also expresses how big the dipole moment is. A molecule can have polar bonds and dipole moments between two atoms, but if the bonds in this molecule are symmetrical such that the dipole moments cancel each other out, then the molecule as a whole is also non polar. Hope this helps!

Yes, this helps a lot. Thanks!
