Bond types

Postby Adrienne B 1J » Fri Jun 01, 2018 9:07 pm

Today in lecture on some of the diagrams some of the bonds had dashes while some were solid, does anyone know what that is?

The dashed and solid lines are used to show the 3D shape of the molecule. The solid lines are used as the backbone for the structure, here bonds exist on the plane of the paper. The solid wedges represent groups that are pointing out of the page, towards you, and dashed lines represent groups pointing into the page, away from you.

They are all the same types of bonds. The different ways that there are drawn are just for the three dimensional structure.

They're used to help portray a 3-D figure without having to draw one out with depth.

Hello :)
I believe Professor Lavelle was trying to give us the overall 3-D model perspective by using dashed, and dotted lines. This gave us a clear understanding of how the model is portrayed.
I hope this helps :)

They're used to distinguish different molecule shapes.

How would we know which of the bonds is a pi bond when we have more than a single sigma bond?
