Significance of Coordination Number?

Postby Mario Reyes 1C » Sat Jun 02, 2018 9:48 pm

Professor Lavelle stressed that the number of bonds equals the coordination number, but what makes the coordination number significant?

i guess it could help with figuring out the shape of a molecule? unsure if it has any other important values that we've talked about

The coordination number describes the number of neighbor atoms with respect to a central atom.

Yeah I'm pretty sure he just stressed it to have us understand the term and what to look for if the coordination number is asked on a test.

The coordination number is the number of bonds the central metal atom is bonded to. Knowing the coordination number can help determine the name of the coordination complex.

Example:
vitamin b12.jpg

The coordination number of the Cobalt in this Vitamin B12 is 6, and its expected geometry is an octahedral.

I think it is important in naming the molecule and knowing its geometric shape. It could also be a question he may ask on the exam.

How would this be tested on the exam? Would it apply to the naming of the shape or the compound itself?

I would guess that it would help with naming the shape on the exam, since Dr. Lavelle said naming of coordination compounds would not be tested.
