Can someone explain to me exactly what a ligand is? I'm confused...

A ligand is basically the atom that binds to the central atom in a coordinate compound.

a ligand is an ion/molecule that binds to a central metal atom, usually through donation of at least one of the ligand's electron pairs.

a ligand is just a molecule or atom that binds to the central atom
