Ligand bonds to the central atom. For coordination compounds, it forms between the compound and the element that goes in to share

If you're asking about how to tell which part of the ligand binds to the metal, the atom (which is part of the ligand) with a lone pair is the one that's directly bonded to the central metal atom.

Hello!
A tip that a UAs told me in order to find a binding site was to look for O- (oxygen with a formal charge of -1) or a Nitrogen with a lone pair.
