A chelating complex is a compound that has a central atom attached to a ligand. It is a cyclic structure.

The textbook cites a chelate as a complex with more than 1 ligand forming a ring of atoms with the central metal atom. These must occur with polydentate ligands.

Is there a minimum amount of ligands required in order to have this happen?

The minimum number of ligands needed in order to form a chelating complex is 1, an important note: only polydentate ligands can form complexes.

Chelate is defined to be the ring of atoms that involve atoms of the ligand and the metal.

You also have to consider the geometry. You have to visually tell if the molecule will bend to make a chelating structure

yes like if its a long string of atoms coming out of two sides of the central atom, you can imagine it would bend and make a chelate if a metal comes and connects each end
