bond that coordinates

Postby Karyn Nguyen 1K » Mon Jun 11, 2018 9:45 pm

How do we know which bond coordinates to the metal? I know the atoms with lone pairs have the potential to coordinate, but which ones actually do?

Usually the element with the lone pairs is a strong indicator that it can attach (and will attach) to the metal ion. Other times, the problem may have to tell you, such as in the case of thiocyanate, which can attach at the sulfur or nitrogen.
