Do we need to memorize our Neutral LIgands and Anionic Ligands or more so understand the conceptual basis of them? I know this was one of the later topics to be covered but I do recall Dr. Lavelle saying that we needed to understand the biological significance? Thanks.

Is ligand just a special name for the thing bonded to the central atom? Like, what really is their significance?

There is an entire field called organometallic chemistry based on the unique chemistry of coordination compounds and how they interact with ligands and affect the energy levels of the metal. Because of the unique bonding that occurs, we have different classes of ligands, so, this distinction becomes important later on.
