Transition Metals

Postby Brandon Mo 4K » Fri Nov 30, 2018 9:13 am

What was the reason that transition metals are good for electron transfer?

I believe it's because they have a tendency to want to lose electrons in order to hace an octet and be more stable. So, that would mean they are more likely to transfer electrons to another atom.

Electron transfers are essentially redox reactions, where the oxidation state of the reactant and product change as the process of an electron moves from one atom or molecule to another. Transition metals can exist in more than one oxidation state and thus electron transfer reactions commonly involve transition metal complexes.

Transition metals tend to have multiple oxidation states, because the energy difference between the oxidation states isn't that large. Since they can have multiple oxidation states, and gain and lose elections easily, they're good for electron transfers.

Transition metals are good for electron transfer because they have multiple oxidation states.
