How do you find the oxidation number when you just have the molecular formula?

Here are some basic rules for assigning oxidation numbers:
-The cation is written first in a formula, followed by the anion.
-The oxidation number of a free element is always 0.
-The oxidation number of a monoatomic ion equals the charge of the ion.
-The usual oxidation number of hydrogen is +1. Except in metal hydrides is -1.
-The sum of the oxidation number of each atom in a compound equals the charge of that compound.
