Oxidation number

Hi can someone explain how to find oxidation numbers like in 17.29 (6th edition) for example? thanks

a) [Fe(CN)6]4-
Okay so for this example, if you were to look up the oxidation number of CN, you'll see that it has a -1 charge. Because there are 6, that means the charge of the iron must be +2 as the overall charge must come out to be -4. I hope that made sense.
Basically:
(oxidation of Fe) + 6(-1) = -4
From this, you would solve for the oxidation of Fe, and would get +2.
