Definition of Ligand

Postby Sara Sadrolsadat 1G » Sun Dec 02, 2018 5:16 pm

I'm having a little trouble understanding the concept of a ligand. Is it only considered to be the molecule or atom that forms coordinate covalent bonds? Are there certain molecules that can only form coordinate covalent bonds and are therefore considered ligands or are ligands conditional and molecules are only considered ligands IF they form those bonds?

A ligand is a molecule or ion that bonds with a metal atom. What we're focusing on is ligands bonding to central transition metals to form coordination compounds. The transition metal itself is typically not the ligand.

The ligand is the molecule which binds to the transition metal in a coordination complex. Therefore, in response to your question, the status of ligand is conditional. It is granted to the molecule based on whether it has bonded to the central metal ion or atom.
