Polydentate Ligands

Postby 705170809 » Sun Dec 02, 2018 5:27 pm

On question 17.33, it asks whether the compounds are polydentate ligands, and if they are, to give the max number of places the ligand can bind to the metal atom. How do you determine the max number of places a ligand can bind to the metal atoms?

Look at the structure of the ligand, including the formal charges and polarities. Atoms with lone pairs or with formal charges tend to be able to accept or donate electrons. This should help you to figure out which atoms within the ligand can bind to another molecule.
