Ligand names

For the final do we have to memorize all of the common ligand names?

Dr. Lavelle mentioned in class that knowing the ligand names is useful, and that we should go to the textbook for common ligand names--however, I'm not sure if this is a requirement for the final.

Yes, you should memorize the chart that he provided on the website under "Naming Coordination Compunds." I believe he will test us by giving us a compound and we would have to name it using ligand names.

I found a quizlet for the ligand names from Chemistry Community 2016. The link is below:

Hi, why do some of the metal ions get the suffix -ate, and some just stay normal when naming coordination compounds? Also, I kind of understand why the ligand sometimes ends in o, but not fully. Could someone please explain this to me? Thanks.

Hello, basically coordination compounds that are negatively charged ions are named with the suffix -ate after the transition metal name. And from my understanding, the ligand ends in o when you are naming the coordination compound, but when you refer to the ligand itself the -o suffix isn't necessary. Hope this helps!

You should probably memorize them just in case, it will be helpful even if it's not required.
