Why can chelating ligands bind cations tightly?

Chelating ligands can bind cations tightly because they can bind in multiple locations instead of just one. The multiple binding sites hold the cation more tightly.

The bonds from chelates are also usually in a ring structure and surrounding the ligand. This goes along with the fact that bonds with chelates are stronger.

How are you able to tell if a molecule is a chelating molecule?

Does this mean that molecules that can act as chelates are polydentate?
