6th Edition 17.37

17.37 With the help of Table 17.4, determine the coordination number of the metal ion in each of the following complexes:

(a) [NiCl4]2-
(b) [Ag(NH3)2]+
(c) [PtCl2(en)2]2+
(d) [Cr(edta)]-


How would you determine the coordination number for c and d?

The coordination number for:
a) 4
b) 2
c) 6
d) 6

The coordination number for c would come from the fact that there are four bonds coming from (en) and two from cl
For d, there are six bonds which is implied through the name of the complex.

For (c), en is a bidentate, so it has two binding sites. (en)2 = 4 binding sites total + 2 binding Cl = 6 ligands total, so the coordination number is 6.
For (d), edta is a hexadentate, so it has six binding sites, making the coordination number for Cr to be 6.
