The oxidation number is the overall charge on the complex, while the coordination number is the number of ligands bonded to the central tradition metal.

What does the term "coordination" refer to with the concept of "coordination number"

The oxidation number is the charge on the central transition metal of the coordination compound. It can be determined by looking at the charges of the coordination complexes ligands, and then the overall charge of the complex. The oxidation number of the metal will be the charge of the coordination complex minus the total charge of its ligands (which are usually negative or neutral).

The coordination number is simply the number of ligands bonded to the central transition metal. The "coordination" in coordination number refers to the coordination compound and its components. It is simply notation describing what information the number is conveying.

The oxidation number is the charge of the central transition metal in the coordination compound, which can be found if you know the charge of the ligands and the overall charge of the compound.

The coordination number is the number of ligands that can be bonded to the central transition metal in the coordination compound.

Coordination # = number of ligands bonded to central atom
Oxidation # = charge on central atom

Can the ligands that count towards coordination number be cations?
