Polarizability and Polarizing Power

Postby diana_calderon_4L » Sat Dec 08, 2018 3:49 am

I still find it diffilcult to distinguish between polarization and polarizing power.

Polarizability is how easy it is to move/pull the cloud, therefore the bigger it is, the easier it is to distort it.
Polarizing power is how good an atom is at pulling on bonding electrons, so the smaller it is the more polarizing power it has. You can also see which one is more positively charged and more electronegative.

The polarizability of an atom increases the bigger the anion it is. The polarizing power of an atom increases the smaller the cation it is.
