Is the coordination number determined by the number of atoms attached to a central atom, the number of bonds (including double and triple) or the number of regions of electron density?

I believe it is determined by the number of atoms which can body to the central atom.

Coordination number is how many bonds there are on a transition metal. Transition metals don't have more than a single bond attached.
