How many bonds can an edta ligand bond to a metal cation?

Since EDTA is hexadentate, it can attach 6 times to the metal. Fun fact, this property allows it to displace molecules, hence why it is used in many buffers (e.g. SDS-PAGE).

It can bond with a metal at 6 different sites, creating the ring structure around the atom known as a chelate.

EDTA is a hexadentate ligand that can form very stable complexes (usually octahedral structures) with most of the transition metals.The sodium salt of EDTA can be found in many commercial products. See the link below for more information about it:

As we know, edta is hexadente, hexa = 6 bonds.

to what extent do you think we need to be familiar with edta for a final? It seems like a really tricky compound to incorporate into a question and i dont think we've had a lot of practice with it?

I think my TA said that we won't be expected to know the structure of edta but we should know the molecular formula (which should be: [C₁₀H₁₂O₈N₂]⁴⁻).
