Re: Coordinate bonds
coordinate bonds form when a single molecule donates 2 electrons to form a bond (this is instead of covalent bonds when each atom "donates" one each). A ligand (like NH3) is any molecule that donates 2 electrons to form a coordinate covalent bond. In class today, NH3 donates N's lone pair to Ni to create the coordination compound. Hope this helps!

Re: Coordinate bonds
coordinate covalent bonds form when a ligand binds to a molecule and provides 100% of the electrons needed to create that bond.

Re: Coordinate bonds
Coordinate covalent bonds form when the ligand donates both electrons in the electron pair.
