Number of Coordination Bonds

Postby Victoria Zheng--2F » Wed Nov 20, 2019 6:15 pm

How do we know how many coordination bonds can a transition metal form? What determines the number of coordination bonds it can form?

It honestly depends on the transition metal. Part of it has to do with the oxidation number of the transition metal (ex: +1 vs +2), which then determines how many anions you have to use to cancel out this number.

I think you would have to find the oxidation number on the transition metal first and then from there you can determine how many coordination bonds that can form.
