Re: Coordination Compound
They are compounds that contain a coordination complex, which is the product of a Lewis acid-base reaction where neutral molecules/anions (ligands) bond to a central metal atom/ion by coordinate covalent bonds (bonds formed when one donor atom supplies both electrons).
Re: Coordination Compound
A coordination compound is one that contains a coordination complex within it. It is when the anions are bonded to the metal via coordinate covalent bonds, where both electrons are donated via the metal atom.
Re: Coordination Compound
It is a covalent bond formed between two molecules. However the 2 electrons in the covalent bond come from the same atom. Typically, a covalent bond is formed between two atoms using one electron from each. However a coordinate covalent bond shows that you can create a covalent bond between two atoms with electrons from only one atom. For example, when NH3 interacts with BF3, the lone pair on N is used to fill the electron deficiency BF3 has (it only has 6 of its valence electrons filled). Once this coordinate covalent bond is formed, B's octet is filled and the molecule is stable.
