What is a ligand? Where does it bond?

Ligands are ions or molecules that are attached to the central metal atom. They usually have one or more lone pair electrons that bind to the central atom to form a coordinate covalent bond.

From what I understand a Ligand is a lewis base that forms at least one coordinate covalent bond with the central atom which is generally a d block element.

Ligands are neutral molecules/anions that bond to a central atom, forming a coordination complex.

The number of ligands are also represented by the X number in the AXE method.
