Formation of coordinate covalent bonds

Postby claudia_1h » Sun Nov 24, 2019 7:54 pm

How does one determine how many coordinate covalent bonds a Tx metal can form when forming a coordination compound? i.e. how do we know how many ligands can/will attach themselves?

The number of ligands that attach must neutralize the charge of the transition metal, so the number that can attach depends on the charge of the central transition metal.

So, the number of coordination compounds depends on the number of bonds that the transition metal will make to neutralize the charge.
