Coordination Sphere

Postby Gabriel Ordonez 2K » Sun Nov 24, 2019 8:28 pm

What is exactly contained in the coordination sphere, what is it, and what is the overall purpose?

The coordination sphere contains the ligands along with the central transition metal. It forms due to the geometry of the molecule.

Why is six the maximum coordination number? (I vaguely remember this from lecture but I’m not sure whether it’s accurate. Is it some simple rule of geometry that dictates it, or is there something I’m missing here?

There is a central ion/atom and the ligands attached to it.

Six is the maximum coordination number because atoms can bond only up to six times (octahedral shape). And since coordination number is simply the number of bonds, then it can only go up to 6.

are all the molecules inside the coordination complex interacting intramolecularly? Or do intermolecular interactions come into play as well?
