A ligand is an ion or molecule attached to a metal atom by coordinate bonding.

A ligand is a molecule attached to a metal (in biology, usually attached to protein/enzyme).

A ligand is also an electron pair donor, so it must have at least one or more lone pairs.

A ligand is a molecule which is attached to a central metal. Ligands make up the coordination sphere.

A ligand is an ion or molecule that bonds to the central metal atom of a coordination compound by donating a pair of electrons to it, meaning that it must have one or more lone pairs of electrons.

How does this term relate to ligands that are discussion in terms of biology?

A ligand in chemistry is an ion/molecule that is attached to a metal through coordinate covalent bonds. Similarly, a ligand in biology is a molecule that binds to a larger molecule. Both involve smaller molecules binding to a larger one.

A biological example would be cisplatin, a well know chemotherapy drug. It has four ligands, 2 Cl's on the same side and 2 NH3's on the other side. They have a lone pair bonded to the central platinum metal atom. Hence, the terminology "Cis" is used.
