Coordination Numbers

Postby Amy Xiao 1I » Sun Nov 24, 2019 9:17 pm

If you were just given a transition metal, would you be able to estimate what coordination numbers it would have? I am under the impression that coordination numbers tell you how many bonds that TM can form.

Does a tm have a coordination number before being part of the complex?

The coordination number is the amount of atoms or molecules attached directly to the central atom.

Yeah, so to tell the coordination number you have to see the number of bonds, but I think you can predict it based on the number of bonds it is able to form.
