What is the significance of octahedral complexes, tetrahedral complexes, an square-planar complexes? Do we need to know these for naming?

Those are the 3 most common shapes that coordinate compounds will take.

In class, dr. Lavelle said that we are not expected to be able to tell the difference between the two complexes that contain 4 ligands (tetrahedral and square planar) but that we would need to tell the difference between those two and octahedral complexes, which have 6 ligands. If the naming is confusing, remember that it is exactly the same as the names for the structures as we learned them for VSEPR- octahedral is 6 bonds around the central atom, square planar and tetrahedral are both 4 bonds.
