Chelating Ligands

The definition of a chelate as given in lecture is that it is a complex containing a ligand that forms a ring of atoms that includes the central metal atom. I don't understand how to apply this definition to the homework problems. If a ligand is polydentate, does that mean it is a chelating ligand? I don't know how to look at ligand/complex and determine if it is chelating...can someone explain?
